Words to pages calculator

A printed paperback fits about 250 to 300 words on a page, so 50,000 words come out at roughly 170 to 200 pages and 80,000 words at about 270 to 320. A Word document in 12-point type holds about 500 words per page single-spaced and about 250 double-spaced, so 1,000 words is 2 pages single-spaced or 4 double-spaced.

The calculator works it out for your trim size, type size, line spacing and number of chapters, runs the other way too (how many words fill 200 pages), and adds reading time. It is free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser.

Book page count calculator

Each chapter starts on a new page and adds about three quarters of a page. 0 = not counted.

Calculated, not counted in any particular book. Paperback figures assume about 11-point type with normal line spacing; Word figures assume 12-point type and 1-inch margins. Updated 31 October 2026.

How the calculator counts

  • Paperback figures are full pages of running text at about 11-point type with normal line spacing: 250 words on 5 × 8 in, 275 on 5.5 × 8.5 in and 300 on 6 × 9 in. These are the planning figures print and self-publishing services publish (usually quoted as about 240–260, 275–290 and 300–345 words); the calculator sits at or below the middle of each range, so it errs towards more pages rather than fewer.
  • Type size changes this a lot: a page at 10 pt holds about 21% more words than at 11 pt, and at 12 pt about 16% fewer, because both the characters per line and the lines per page change.
  • Every chapter starts on a new page. If you enter a number of chapters, each adds about three quarters of a page: the chapter heading plus, on average, half an empty last page.
  • The Write Book paperback (13.5 × 21 cm) is calculated from its own layout: about 245 words per full page in English (270 in Hebrew), 0.875 pages per chapter and 5 opening pages (title, copyright, contents). These are properties of the layout, not an average of anyone's books.
  • Word document figures assume 12-point type and 1-inch (2.5 cm) margins: about 500 words single-spaced, 330 at 1.5 spacing and 250 double-spaced.
  • Dialogue takes more pages than the same number of words in long paragraphs, because every line of speech starts a new line. Treat every result as an estimate: the exact count only exists once the book is laid out.
  • Reading time uses 238 words per minute, the average adult silent-reading rate for non-fiction in a 2019 review of reading-rate studies (Brysbaert, Journal of Memory and Language); fiction is read slightly faster, at about 260.

Frequently asked questions

How many pages is 50,000 words?

About 170 to 200 pages in a paperback: roughly 167 pages at 6 × 9 in, 182 at 5.5 × 8.5 in and 200 at 5 × 8 in, before chapter openings. In a Word document in 12-point type it is about 100 pages single-spaced or 200 double-spaced.

How many pages is 1,000 words?

About 2 pages single-spaced or 4 pages double-spaced in a Word document with 12-point type, and about 3 to 4 pages in a printed paperback.

How many words are on a page of a book?

Usually 250 to 300 in a paperback with 11-point type: about 250 on a 5 × 8 in page, 275 on 5.5 × 8.5 in and 300 on 6 × 9 in. Larger type, wider margins and a lot of dialogue all lower it.

How many words is a 300-page book?

About 82,500 words in a 5.5 × 8.5 in paperback and about 90,000 in a 6 × 9 in one, a little less once each chapter's opening page is counted.

How many pages is a novel?

Most adult novels run 70,000 to 100,000 words, which comes to about 230 to 400 printed pages depending on the trim size and the type.

How long does it take to read a 300-page book?

About 6 hours at 238 words per minute, the average adult silent-reading speed, if each page holds about 280 words (84,000 words in all).

Does the calculator store what I type?

No. It runs in your browser and sends nothing anywhere.
